Members Opening Reception Trenton Doyle Hancock, Rafa Esparza, and Tom Slaughter
Join us on March 9 to celebrate the opening of three new exhibitions: Trenton Doyle Hancock’s Mind of the Mound: Critical Mass, Rafa Esparza’s staring at the sun, and Tom Slaughter: Icon Alphabet.
Trenton Doyle Hancock’s largest ever solo project will fill our massive Building 5 gallery with forms and figures from the artist’s densely detailed mythologies. Inspired by comic books, superheroes and popular culture — and fully integrating painting, installation, video, and performance — the exhibition represents the “critical mass” of the artist’s vision.
In staring at the sun, artist Rafa Esparza continues his long examination of land, history, and family, transforming one of MASS MoCA’s only “white cube” galleries into a brown gallery built with adobe bricks. Bold lines and primary colors defined Tom Slaughter’s modernist visual vocabulary in his work across media including paintings, silk screens, and illustrations. The new mural, Icon Alphabet stretches across 140 feet, incorporating imagery culled from Slaughter’s work by his daughters, Hannah and Nell Jocelyn (designed by Jimmy Mezei).
